Chicago-Based Restaurant Chain Founded by Michael LaPidus Leads Growth in BBQ Segment of Fast Casual Dining Industry with Focus on “Legendary Service” and “Culinary Excellence”

June 21, 2016 (LAGRANGE, IL) -- Q-BBQ takes home the People’s Choice Award for the second year in a row at the area’s largest rib festival, Ribfest Chicago. The win comes on the heels of a sold-out pop-up restaurant at the iconic Willis Tower and the opening of their fourth and fifth locations in Northwest Indiana and Oak Park in less than 6 months. With both critical accolades, and “raving fans,” Q-BBQ has become the fastest growing BBQ concept in the fast casual industry, a segment of the dining industry that continues to see unprecedented growth.

By the numbers, Americans like to eat out. In 2015, according to Bloomberg News, the Commerce Department reported that sales at restaurants and bars overtook spending at grocery stores for the first time ever. Fast casual is here to stay. During the recession, the fast casual segment grew, as the casual dining segment floundered. Since 1999 the fast casual segment has grown by 550 percent, hitting the 250 percent mark in 2007, and has doubled since. As Americans continue to dine out more than they dine at home, they demand a great meal, great service, and a great environment. This has all contributed to fast casual becoming the fastest growing restaurant segment in the US, with sales at $39 billion in 2014 and reaching a projected $69 billion by 2019.

Q-BBQ has quietly become one of the fastest growing fast concepts in the area. They were the forerunners in the space as the first fast casual barbecue restaurant in Chicagoland when they opened 7 years ago. Since then, for Q-BBQ it’s all about growth, with 5 locations, 200 employees, and $10M in annual sales.

But what really sets Q-BBQ apart?

“We don’t sell barbeque; we sell reasons to come back,” is the mantra for Michael LaPidus, who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into customer service and training. “We have great food, but if we don’t have amazing client service, no one will bring their families to be a part of our family. We need to do this right.”

For LaPidus, doing it right meant spending a year traveling around the U.S. to every small barbecue stand he could find to perfect his authentic barbeque. Q-BBQ caters to foodies, and since half of all Millennials identify themselves as foodies, customers can’t get enough of Q-BBQ’s 22-hour hickory smoked brisket, dry-rubbed Memphis chicken wings, 4-Cheese Mac-Q-Roni, and of course their award winning ("always-smoked, never-broiled") ribs.
